Traders often treat the exponential moving average as an upgrade. It is not. It is a different memory profile: recent closes weigh more, so the line turns sooner and chatters more in ranges.
When EMA earns its place
Intraday holds that must notice a reclaim of the open quickly can benefit from an EMA’s earlier turn — provided a filter blocks crosses during flat midday liquidity. Without that filter, the earlier turn is simply earlier confusion.
When SMA is the calmer partner
Multi-day swings on mid-cap equities often prefer a simple average’s even forgetfulness. Pullbacks look cleaner; false crosses during holiday weeks appear less dramatic.
Side-by-side habit
In our lag laboratory exercise, students plot both on the same stretch without trading. The goal is recognition, not allegiance. Your framework may keep an EMA on the hourly and an SMA on the daily — that is coherent if the written rules say so.
